The level crossing at Mountain Highway in Bayswater was removed in 2016 and the new Bayswater Station opened in 2017.
The level crossing was removed at the same time as the crossing at Scoresby Road. Both were removed by lowering the Belgrave/Lilydale rail line below Mountain Highway and Scoresby Road.
The new station precinct includes walking and cycling paths connecting Mountain Highway to Scoresby Road and linking in to the wider bike path network.
Public artwork has also been installed to enhance the newly created Mountain Highway underpass to Bayswater Station. The mural in the theme of 'Connecting to place, connecting people' was designed by Aboriginal artists, Graffix Creative, and students from Bayswater Secondary College.
On behalf of the Victorian Government, the Level Crossing Removal Project is removing 85 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2025.
