The level crossing at Heatherdale Road, Mitcham was removed in 2017 by lowering the rail line under the road.
A new Heatherdale Station was rebuilt on the east side of Heatherdale Road as part of the project, with direct access to car parks and a 'kiss and ride' drop-off point.
A section of the 10-kilometre Box Hill to Ringwood walking and cycling path was also completed as part of the project.
On behalf of the Victorian Government, the Level Crossing Removal Project is removing 85 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2025.
