The boom gates at Burke Road, Glen Iris were removed and a new Gardiner Station opened in January 2016.
All work at the crossing and station sites was finished by August 2016.
This level crossing was removed by lowering the rail line below Burke Road, with station platforms now lowered and accessed by lifts and stairs.
The project included the consolidation of tram stops near the station on Burke Road and the addition of new walking and cycling paths nearby.
New stations star in sustainability
Melbourne’s reinvigorated train stations are receiving high praise across the sustainability sector thanks to a range of industry-first initiatives saving time, money and the environment.
We are happy to announce that the Burke Road Level Crossing Removal Project will be fully completed by August this year.
At Burke Road in Glen Iris, the project team has removed the level crossing, rebuilt Gardiner Station, and provided improvements to road and public transport connections.
