Works will begin in 2018 to get rid of the dangerous and congested level crossing at Buckley Street in Essendon.
The level crossing will be removed by the building of a road underpass beneath the railway line, including new service roads to maintain local access.
Buckley Street is one of the key arterials in Melbourne’s inner north-west, connecting Keilor and Avondale Heights in the west with Mount Alexander Road in the east.
The boom gates are down for about 78 minutes during the morning peak, causing congestion, frustration and potential danger for the 11,000 vehicles that use it each day.
The benefits of the road underpass are that it: puts safety first; preserves the heritage listed train station; improves traffic flow and travel times; requires no private property acquisition; minimises disruption; creates better connections and creates more open space.
