Level crossing removed

On behalf of the Victorian Government, the Level Crossing Removal Project is overseeing the removal of 75 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2025.

The removal of the level crossing at Bell Street, Preston, is in the planning stage.

The Bell Street, Preston level crossing is located between St Georges Road and High Street. On a typical weekday the road carries 52,000 vehicles during the morning peak between 7:00am and 9:00am.

During this time, the boom gates are down for about 27 minutes, significantly impacting travel times for thousands of motorists and causing frustration for road users.

This level crossing presents many unique challenges due to the proximity of nearby level crossings and the site’s topography.

Further technical investigations are being carried out to arrive at a design that’s right for Preston and there will be opportunities for the community to get involved.

The project will work to deliver a new station precinct, improved traffic flow, safer paths and better connections for pedestrians and cyclists.
