Mernda Rail Extension Project

[Title: Mernda Rail]

[Vision: Map showing where Mernda rail extension will go]

The Mernda rail extension will meet the needs of one of Victoria's fastest growing regions, by helping to connect local people to work, study, and important services right across Melbourne.

[Vision: South Morang showing 8km of new railway to Mernda and location of stations]

The project will extend the South Morang rail line with the construction of eight kilometres of new railway to the proposed Mernda Town Centre. Featuring three new state of the art stations at Marymede, Hawkstowe and Mernda, it's expected to be used by up to 8,000 people each day.

[Vision: New Station at Hawkstowe - 2000 car parks - McDonalds Road]

We've developed a design that reflects local feedback, by including an additional station at Hawkstowe that the community asked for, providing 2,000 car parks, 400 more than originally planned, and by keeping the majority of the new rail at ground level.

[Vision: Underpass connection to Yan Yean Pipe Track]

We're improving walking and cycling connectivity with a new shared use path connecting South Morang to Mernda and all the stations in between.

[Vision: Marymede Station location - car parks]

The new station at Marymede will be built at ground level, and will feature over 550 car parks and bicycle storage facilities.

[Vision: Artist's impression of Marymede Station]

Connecting into the walking and cycling path network, it has a spacious landscaped forecourt which offers a series of relaxing spaces to meet before catching the train.

[Vision: Arial view of Plenty Road]

The new line passes under busy Plenty Road as it heads further north.

Through the use of two underpasses and three rail bridges, the Mernda rail extension avoids the construction of any level crossings.

[Vision: Lakes Boulevarde - artist's impression of train and pedestrians]

A new overpass adjacent to Lakes Boulevarde will provide access for walkers and cyclists to the future Hawkstowe Recreational Precinct.

[Vision: Hawkstowe Station - Plenty Road]

A new station at Hawkstowe will have up to 350 parking spaces for commuters.

[Vision: Artist's Impression of Hawkstowe Station and view from platform]

The station entry is on the northern side of Hawkstowe Parade with the platform shifted to the southern side providing uninterrupted views over Plenty Gorge Park.

[Vision: Steel girder rail bridge]

A steel girder rail bridge will cross Simon Creek and The Parkway, a design that has been based on historic rail bridges of the past.

[Vision: Overview of train and Goulburn Street]

The sensitive urban design has been selected for the area between The Parkway and the new Mernda Station.

[Vision: Artist's impression of landscaped mounds to limit noise]

The design keeps the rail line as far away from homes as possible, while landscaped mounds will minimise noise.

[Vision: Goulburn Street]

And a new walking and cycling path will improve amenity in the area.

[Vision: Overview of Bridge Inn Road - Mernda Station]

Neighbouring the proposed Town Centre, the new premium station at Mernda will provide a fully integrated transport hub that is expected to service 5,000 passengers each day.

[Vision: Bus Interchange - proposed Main Street]

It will link seamlessly with the future Station Road providing easy access to shopping, entertainment, cafés and local services.

[Vision: Artist's impression of Mernda Station]

The Mernda rail extension will begin construction in early 2017, and will be open to commuters in 2019.
