Bonbeach: rail under the road

Mark – Senior Project Manager

We're removing the dangerous level crossing at Station Street at Bonbeach and building a brand new station. It's a big and complex project, and I'm here to tell you exactly how we're going to do that.

After extensive technical and environmental investigations, and taking into account your feedback, we'll be removing this level crossing by lowering the rail line into a trench, and building a new road bridge at the current road level.

Access to the new train station will be at ground level, with platforms at the lower level. This project is close to the Edithvale-Seaford wetlands, so we're investigating the impact of groundwater flows at this location.

That's why we're referring the project to the Minister for Planning to consider conducting an Environment Effects Statement.

It's important we do this as trenches can cause changes to groundwater levels and flows, which could have an effect on this sensitive environment.

We'll keep you up to date with the progress of the Environment Effects Statement.

This is an extensive process, which does include community involvement, and typically can take around a year to properly complete.

In the meantime, we'll be getting on with further engineering and technical investigations, so we can be in a position to start construction as soon as possible.

We're looking forward to removing this level crossing, to help improve traffic flow and safety for the Bonbeach community.
