We're removing 10 more level crossings by 2025, bringing the total to 85 level crossings gone for good.

Works notice – Thornbury Station rail communication upgrades

22 Jun 2021

The Victorian Government is removing four dangerous and congested level crossings at Oakover Road, Bell Street, Cramer Street and Murray Road, and building new Bell and Preston Stations.

The level crossings will be removed by raising the rail line over the roads, improving safety and accessibility, and delivering new community open spaces.

Upcoming works

From 26 June to end of August 2021, we will be recommencing works to upgrade essential underground power and rail communication systems (CSR). The works will take place adjacent to Thornbury Station, between Hutton Street and Watt Street and will include trenching and laying underground cables.

During these works, the pedestrian rail crossing north of Thornbury Station will be closed with a detour in place via Hutton Street.

Street parking along Clapham Street will be unavailable for one week during the works. In late July, we’ll also need to close the intersection of Hutton Street and Clapham Street for one week, so we can continue trenching and laying underground cables. Directly impacted residents will be contacted prior to these works.

Other temporary traffic and pedestrian detour routes and traffic management will be in place intermittently to help you move safely around the area. Access to private properties and businesses will be maintained at all times.

Vegetation removal

The Project has worked to minimise required vegetation removal, conducting detailed assessments for every tree with a priority on retaining as many as possible. Only trees confirmed to be impacted by the installation of underground services will be removed.

All vegetation removal will occur under the supervision of qualified arborists and wildlife handlers. Residents living near sites requiring vegetation removal will be contacted prior to works.

What to expect

  • Non-destructive digging (NDD) and small excavation equipment operating in the rail corridor
  • Some tree and vegetation removal
  • Some noise, dust and vibration from construction machinery
  • An increase in construction workforce and vehicles in the area.

Health and safety

The Preston Level Crossing Removal works are progressing safely under the current circuit breaker coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions in Victoria.

Construction is an authorised industry and COVIDsafe Plans are in place on all our project sites.

The health and safety of our workforce and community is our top priority.

Workers on all of Victoria’s Big Build sites are currently required to wear face masks unless they meet any of the criteria for exception – such as a medical condition or to meet Occupational Health and Safety guidelines.

Physical distancing measures are in place, as well as increased hygiene practices.

For more information and advice about the coronavirus (COVID-19), please visit the Victorian coronavirus website.
