We're removing 10 more level crossings by 2025, bringing the total to 85 level crossings gone for good.

Works notice – Smith Street, Thornbury pedestrian crossing closure February to May 2022

24 Jan 2022

Work is now underway to remove four dangerous and congested level crossings at Oakover Road, Bell Street, Cramer Street and Murray Road, and build new stations at Bell and Preston. The level crossings will be removed by raising the rail line over the roads, improving safety and accessibility, and delivering new community open spaces.

As part of the Preston Level Crossing Removal Project, we are improving safety at the pedestrian crossing at Smith Street, Thornbury. This includes installing upgraded warning systems such as signals and safety gates, which will alert pedestrians when a train is approaching.

To complete these works, we will be closing the Smith Street pedestrian crossing for approximately three months, from Monday 7 February until late May 2022.  Pedestrian detours will be available via Hutton Street and Normanby Avenue, see map below.

We will also be undertaking 24/7 works from Friday 11 February – Monday 14 February. These works will include the removal of the existing pedestrian crossing; excavating to install new fences and retaining walls; trenching for laying cables and the install of the new pedestrian crossing.

The Smith Street pedestrian crossing will open in late May, when all new cables and signals are live and trains are running on a single track between Thornbury and Regent stations.

What to expect

  • Pedestrian detours via Hutton Street or Normanby Avenue
  • Closure of Smith Street pedestrian crossing for approximately three months
  • Some noise from machinery and tools
  • Increased activity in the area
