We're removing 10 more level crossings by 2025, bringing the total to 85 level crossings gone for good.

Works notice – Rail communication upgrades at Thornbury Station

07 Sep 2021

The level crossing will be removed as part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to remove 85 dangerous and congested crossings across Melbourne.

Upcoming works

From 14 September for approximately one week, we continue works to upgrade essential underground power and rail communication systems (CSR). The works will take place adjacent to Thornbury Station, between Hutton Street and Watt Street and will include trenching and laying underground cables.

During these works, there will be increased activity near Ethel Street. The pedestrian rail crossing north of Thornbury Station will be closed with a detour in place via Hutton Street.

Other temporary traffic and pedestrian detour routes and traffic management will be in place intermittently to help you move safely around the area. Access to private properties and businesses will be maintained at all times.

What to expect

  • Construction machinery including small excavation equipment operating in the rail corridor
  • Some noise, dust and vibration from construction machinery
  • An increase in construction workforce and vehicles in the area.

Health and safety

The Preston Level Crossing Removal Project has been designated a critical state infrastructure project under the latest restrictions. Work is continuing safely with strict COVIDSafe plans in place and we’ll continue to comply with all directions from the Chief Health Officer.

We are managing the number of staff attending our worksites, as well as implementing preventative measures to ensure community safety.

Safety measures across the site include temperature screening, additional protective equipment including masks, daily health screening of workers, enhanced cleaning, staggered shifts and break times, and physical distancing.
