We're removing 10 more level crossings by 2025, bringing the total to 85 level crossings gone for good.

Works notice – Preston service investigation works and rail communications upgrades

27 Aug 2021

The Victorian Government is removing four dangerous and congested level crossings at Oakover Road, Bell Street, Cramer Street and Murray Road, and building new Bell and Preston Stations. The level crossings will be removed by raising the rail line over the roads, improving safety and accessibility, and delivering new community open spaces.

To facilitate the construction and upgrade of essential underground power and rail communication systems (CSR), works are required along the rail corridor adjacent to Croxton Station along Stott Street and the intersection at Woolton Avenue from Monday 30 August to mid-October. The CSR will hold the power and signalling for the new elevated rail line.

The works will include the investigation of services close to the rail line, using a non-destructive digging (NDD) machine and trenching to lay underground cables.

These works can cause periods of noise and will include the following pedestrian access changes:

  • Intermittent closures of the pedestrian crossing north of Croxton Station with a detour via the crossing at Herbert St and Railway Parade
  • Closure of playground on Stott Street while works are undertaken

We will provide timing of the above closures closer to when they are happening.

Some carparking on the corner of Stott St and Woolton Avenue will be removed to facilitate the works.

These works will be carried out in and nearby the rail corridor between 7am – 6pm weekdays and 7am – 3pm Saturdays.

What to expect

  • Non-destructive digging (NDD) and small excavation equipment operating in the rail corridor
  • Some noise, dust and vibration from construction machinery
  • An increase in construction workforce and vehicles in the area
  • Closure of playground on Stott Street
  • Pedestrian crossing closure at Croxton Station

Temporary vehicle and pedestrian detour routes and traffic management may be in place intermittently to help you move safely around the area.  Access to private properties and businesses will be maintained at all times.

Health and Safety

The Preston Level Crossing Removal Project has been designated a critical state infrastructure project under the latest restrictions. Work is continuing safely with strict COVIDSafe plans in place and we’ll continue to comply with all directions from the Chief Health Officer.

We are managing the number of staff attending our worksites, as well as implementing preventative measures to ensure community safety.

Safety measures across the site include temperature screening, additional protective equipment including masks, daily health screening of workers, enhanced cleaning, staggered shifts and break times, and physical distancing.
