We're removing 10 more level crossings by 2025, bringing the total to 85 level crossings gone for good.

Works notice – Preston acquired property removal

07 Jul 2021

The Victorian Government is removing four dangerous and congested level crossings at Oakover Road, Bell Street, Cramer Street and Murray Road, and building new Bell and Preston Stations. The level crossings will be removed by raising the rail line over the roads, improving safety and accessibility, and delivering new community open spaces.

From 12 July until mid-August, the Preston Level Crossing Removal Project will be removing acquired properties on Bruce Street, Herbert Street and Emery Street to allow for the construction of the rail bridge.

Demolition will commence at the Emery Street properties and then move north towards Bruce Street.

During this time some street parking will be temporarily unavailable on Bruce Street, Herbert Street and Emery Street to allow for construction vehicle access. Directly impacted neighbours will be notified closer to the date. Access to neighbouring properties will be maintained throughout the demolition.

Temporary traffic management will also be in place to help you move safely around the area.

After this work is complete, the project site will extend to outside 25 Bruce Street and the other cleared properties will become part of the Preston Level Crossing Removal Project site.

Vegetation removal

The Project has worked to minimise required vegetation removal, conducting detailed assessments for every tree with a priority on retaining as many as possible. Only vegetation that will be impacted by the construction of the rail bridge or deemed unsafe will be removed.

All vegetation removal will occur under the supervision of qualified arborists and wildlife handlers. Residents living near sites requiring vegetation removal will be contacted prior to works.

What to expect

  • Non-destructive digging (NDD) and small excavation equipment
  • Some noise, dust and vibration from construction machinery
  • An increase in construction workforce and vehicles in the area including excavators

Changes to access

  • Parking changes on Bruce Street, Emery Street and Herbert Street
