Works notice – Maroondah Highway weekend night works – 7pm Friday 25 September to 5am Monday 28 September

Construction on the Maroondah Highway level crossing removal project has been deemed critical under Stage 4 restrictions and works will continue with strict health and safety protocols in place. Workforce numbers have already been significantly reduced to support directions from the Chief Health Officer.

The health and safety of our workforce and community remains our top priority.

Under new restrictions workers on these sites are required to wear face coverings unless they meet  any of the criteria for an exception such as a medical condition or for OH&S guidelines. Physical distancing measures are in place as well as increased hygiene practices.

Night works, buses replacing trains, traffic impacts

Between 7pm on Friday 25 September and 5am on Monday 28 September, there will be lane narrowing near the level crossing on Maroondah Highway to facilitate construction access onto the rail corridor. Traffic management will be in place to assist vehicles and pedestrians.

The taxi rank and some buses will be relocated close to the station, please check the PTV website for changes and signage at the bus bays.

Buses will replace trains on the Lilydale line from:

  • 9pm Friday 25 September to last service on Sunday 28 September between Lilydale and Ringwood.

During this period, we will work around the clock in John Street, William Street East, William Street West, Maroondah Highway and Melba Avenue to:

  • relocate existing train signalling cables and overhead structures in the rail corridor.
  • install rail safety fencing.
  • utility service investigations and relocations.
  • construct overhead foundations.

Residents and businesses will retain access to properties during these works, and traffic controllers and signage will be in place to advise road users of traffic changes.

John Street

  • To allow for construction works, 12 John Street will be used for access into the rail corridor.
  • Traffic management will be in place to facilitate the safe delivery of construction material and equipment using large trucks.

William Street East and West

  • William Street East and West will be closed to through traffic, access to businesses will be maintained.
  • Maroondah Highway service roads will be closed to through traffic at William Street East and West.
  • Parking will remain available on the Maroondah Highway service road by Bunnings, however it will be reduced to enable cars to turn. There will be no entry in this service road for vehicles with trailers.
  • Parking will remain available on the Maroondah Highway service road by Reece and traffic controllers will assist with vehicle movements.
  • The pedestrian crossing will be closed with a detour along William Street East and West.

Melba Avenue

To allow for construction works, traffic management will be in place and intermittently stopping vehicles and pedestrians on Melba Avenue to facilitate the safe delivery of large construction machinery and equipment.

What to expect

  • Between Friday 25 September to 5am Monday 28 September, we will work 24-hours a day.
  • Lane narrowing near the level crossing on Maroondah Highway and an increase in traffic management  on local roads.
  • Changes to vehicle access, location of taxi services and bus services within the Lilydale Station precinct.
  • Traffic controllers to assist with vehicle movements in the Maroondah Highway service roads.
  • Increase in construction noise and activity during the night, with vehicles and workers on site.
  • Pedestrian detour on William Street East and West.
  • Workers will be on site with large machinery and equipment in John Street, Lilydale Station precinct,  Melba Avenue and William Street East and West.
  • Increase in construction lighting in John Street access route, Maroondah Highway, William Street East  and West and the Lilydale Station precinct.
  • Traffic management will be in place to facilitate the safe delivery of construction material and equipment using large trucks.
