Works notice – hardstand and L-Beam works at Donovan Street, Preston
13 Jan 2022
The level crossing will be removed as part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to remove 85 dangerous and congested crossings across Melbourne.
Upcoming works
From Monday 17 January to Wednesday 19 January between 9.30am and 3.30pm, we will be installing hardstand at the Bell Street and Donovan Street intersection.
Hardstand is the installation of a crushed rock surface to park and move heavy machinery without damaging the ground underneath. We need to install hardstand to continue building the new rail bridge.
During these works sections of Donovan Street will be closed to traffic and the section of footpath on the corner of Donovan Street and Bell Street will be closed to pedestrians. A pedestrian detour route will be available via Emery Street.
Residential driveways may be temporarily blocked during these works. Directly impacted residents will be notified prior to works taking place.
Please note there will also be night works at Bell Station, to complete the footings of the new Bell Station from Wednesday 12 January until the end of the month.
L-Beam delivery and install
From Thursday 20 January for up to a week, there will be night works to install L-beams (concrete structures which will form the new rail bridge) on Donovan Street.
Due to Department of Transport regulations, the L-Beams will be delivered at night and lifted into place between 7pm and 7am. The beams will be delivered via Murray Road and placed onto a specialised transport unit at the Preston oval precinct. The beams will then be driven through site to where they are being installed.
The bridge beam deliveries are dependent on a range of factors including weather conditions. Every effort will be made to complete these works on schedule however, dates are subject to change. Directly impacted residents will be notified prior to works commencing.
Local access
From Thursday 20 January between 9pm-5am, when the L-beams are being installed, there will be no access to driveways on Donovan Street. These closures will run for up to a week.
Pedestrian access to Donovan Street will be blocked intermittently when L-beams are being lifted into place.
To receive updates on these closures, text DONOVAN to 0428 581 917.
What to expect
- Some noise from machinery and increased activity on site
- Activity at Preston Oval as we load the beams onto a trailer, prior to installation
- Possible delays on Murray Road, Cramer Street and Bell Street
- Traffic changes on Donovan Street, with some driveways being temporarily blocked
- Up to two deliveries per night via Murray Road
