Western Package Community Update – May 2017
12 Jul 2017
Win for the West: Five level crossings to go
Contracts are now signed, with work to start soon on the long awaited partial duplication of the Altona Loop and removal of five more dangerous and congested level crossings in Melbourne's west.
As part of the package of works, contractors will first remove the Kororoit Creek Road level crossing and partially duplicate the Altona Loop. They will then have the opportunity to remove a further four level crossings on the Werribee and Williamstown lines - at Cherry and Werribee Streets in Werribee, Aviation Road in Laverton, and Ferguson Street in Williamstown, as well as the Abbotts Road level crossing in Dandenong South.
Removing these level crossings and partially duplicating the Altona Loop will make communities safer and reduce congestion for commuters and residents in Melbourne's west. The boom gates are down at these level crossings for much of the morning peak. No more boom gates will mean no more waiting for the thousands of drivers who rely on these roads every day.
Travel will be easier and safer - whether you're a train commuter, pedestrian, cyclist, or driver.

The level crossing at Kororoit Creek Road will be removed by building a rail bridge across the road. During construction, the Altona Loop will also be partially duplicated between the Werribee Line junction and Kororoit Creek. The project team has ensured most of the duplication works will be completed while trains are still running, meaning less disruption for commuters, and a shorter overall construction time.
The rail bridge design has incorporated local community feedback, ensuring more natural light under the bridge and the plantation of native trees and shrubs in the area. This $82 million project will support jobs in the west, with a strong focus on apprentices, trainees, and engineering cadets.
Partial duplication of the Altona Loop
During community consultation, we heard loud and clear that you wanted improvements to the Altona Loop. We have incorporated this into the project, and will now duplicate the single section of track between the Werribee Line junction and Kororoit Creek at the same time as the level crossing removal. This will finally allow trains on the loop to pass each other, which will improve reliability and reduce the likelihood of delays and trains bypassing the loop.
Community consultation is a critical part of the Level Crossing Removal Project and there will be many opportunities to get involved and provide input and feedback as these projects progress so stay tuned for more updates.
