We’re removing the dangerous and congested level crossings at Union Road, Surrey Hills and Mont Albert Road, Mont Albert by lowering the rail line beneath the roads in an open trench and building a new premium station with better facilities and more services.

Major works to lower the tracks into an open trench and build a new, safer station will start in 2022 and the dangerous level crossings will be gone in 2023 – two years earlier than originally planned.

A rejuvenated green space

We’ve designed the station precinct to maximise the surrounding open space and modernise Lorne Parade Reserve.

Lorne Parade Reserve will form the green heart for the new station. Featuring greenery and landscaping in and around the station precinct, the rejuvenated Lorne Parade Reserve will be celebrated as a modern green space for generations to come.

We’ll retain as many of the large trees as we can during construction and replace every tree we do remove with at least two new trees. In addition, landscaping at the end of the project will include thousands of new trees, plants and shrubs.

The final design of the reserve will be developed in further consultation with the community.

What you'll get

  • rejuvenated open space
  • new play area
  • seating and shelter
  • bike path

During construction

In late 2021 we’ll fence off Lorne Parade Reserve as part of site establishment.

We’ll need to use Lorne Parade Reserve for the duration of the project, but once we’re done there will be substantial improvements to the Reserve itself.
