Station Street and Eel Race Road Community update - June 2018
29 May 2018
The Level Crossing Removal Authority is removing 13 level crossings along the Frankston line to improve safety and reduce congestion.
The construction of the new Station Street road bridge across the Patterson River is the first stage in the removal of three dangerous and congested level crossings in the Carrum vicinity.
Works for the construction of the new Station Street road bridge are progressing at a good pace. Before the end of the year, the local community and visitors of the Carrum area will be able to use the new road bridge to safely and efficiently access the Carrum Station, the beach, Patterson River and surrounding suburbs.
Over the past weeks, piling activities have commenced to build robust and stable foundations for the new road bridge.
The ongoing piling activities will take place throughout June and are only required in the initial phases of this project. We understand that the nature of these activities can be quite disruptive and we thank you for your patience while we complete these works.
Works during June
Our crews have been working hard to establish the foundations for the Station Street road bridge. Piling works will continue throughout June in the lead-up to the bridge beam installation. The beams are the load bearing component of the bridge superstructure and will support the bridge deck. There are 32 beams and each beam weighs approximately 35-tonnes.
To perform these works, the beams will be lifted into position using a 250-tonne crane on a jack up barge. There will be land-based cranes on each side of the Patterson River at the existing Station Street construction sites to assist with these works.
The installation of beams will take place between June and September 2018.
Also in June, we will be installing headstocks. The headstocks are the component of the bridge which will transfer loads from the bridge superstructure to the piers. The headstocks will provide sufficient seating for the bridge beams and disperse the loads from the bearings to the piers.
As we prepare for the safe removal of the Eel Race Road and Station Street level crossings and the construction of the new Carrum Station, site investigations will be required over the coming months. We will notify residents and motorists in advance about these site investigations and potential impacts throughout the project.
Since the beginning of our construction activities, we have aimed to perform our works in a safe and efficient manner. Our goal is to minimise impacts to residents, traders and train operations where possible. Due to beam lifting near the train overhead wires, some beams will need to be lifted during night time, right after the last train and before the first train, i.e. between 12 midnight and 5:00am.
There are four planned night shifts between June and August, starting around mid-June 2018. As the construction moves forward, we will contact you if additional night shifts are required. No impacts such as vibration or loud noises are expected from these night works.
We are making every effort to minimise disruptions wherever possible. We will continue carrying out noise and vibration monitoring throughout this work to ensure we are complying with the required standards and we will notify you in advance of noisy or disruptive works.
For more information on these works please see our disruptions page.
Due to train replacement bus operations, up to 40 car parks are currently closed in the Carrum Station car park. The spaces have been closed to allow safe passage for customers alighting from buses and transferring to trains.
Some all-day unmetered parking is available at the Carrum Foreshore Reserve, accessible via Old Post Office off Nepean Highway. Commuters can also use all-day unmetered car spaces at the Seaford North Reserve car park on Railway Parade.
Please observe signs at both locations to see which car spaces are all-day parking.
Patterson River impacts
Some short river closures of a couple of hours will be required at times to safely construct the new Station Street road bridge.
Any closures will be kept to a minimum and notice will be provided to river users.
Further information will also be available on the Parks Victoria website. River traffic management will continue in place and all ramps at the Patterson River Launching Way will remain open throughout construction.
