Station Road & Eel Race Road community update - July 2018

03 Jun 2018

The Level Crossing Removal Authority is removing 13 level crossings along the Frankston line to improve safety and reduce congestion. The construction of the new Station Street road bridge across the Patterson River is the first stage in the removal of three dangerous and congested level crossings in the vicinity of Carrum.

Works to build the new Station Street road bridge have continued with construction activities due for completion before the end of the year. Extending Station Street across the Patterson River will help improve traffic flow between Carrum and Bonbeach and will improve safety and travel times for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Patterson River construction

Works during July

Our works are progressing at a steady pace and our crews have been working on installing the permanent piles on the north and south abutments of the road bridge.

We understand piling works are quite noisy, and therefore, strict noise and vibration limits remain in place while we conduct our works, as well as mitigation measures including monitoring stations and respite options for residents living near the construction area.

Extended work hours for piling activities

Safety is a priority for the construction of the Station Street bridge project and there are several factors that we must consider to safely operate the crane during the piling works. Recent strong winds and tide conditions have slowed down the piling activities and consequently affected our construction schedule.

The piling activities are now expected to be finalised by mid-July. Additionally, extended work hours on site will be required on Saturdays and potentially on some Sundays. Work hours are now Monday to Saturday, from 7am to 6pm as well as some Sundays from 7am to 6pm.

Night works

There are time-sensitive construction activities that will need to be conducted during night shifts. Working during night hours will allow us to get our work done safely while ensuring that there is minimal impact to commuters and train operations.

As the construction of the bridge moves forward, we are committed to implementing measures to minimise the impact to residents. This will include performing low impact construction activities during our night shifts, using solar generated lights to avoid the generator noise, and installing noise monitors to ensure that our activities are conducted with as minimal impact as possible.

What’s next?

Piling works will continue until mid-July during day hours, i.e. between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Sunday in the lead-up to the bridge beam installation.

In early July, trucks will be delivering the bridge beams to the construction site at the Patterson River Launching Way as well as to the two smaller sites on Station Street in Bonbeach and Carrum.

Station Street will remain open, but there will be minor delays whilst the delivery truck is reversing into the construction site to be unloaded. Traffic management will be in place to facilitate the safe delivery of the beams and to allow for safe pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the area. The beam installation will occur during the months of July and August.

Community viewing area

Interested in the Station Street road bridge? You can now have a “front row seat” to the action at our new community viewing area. The viewing area is located within the park along the Patterson River, near Valetta Street and will have information signage.

Community Site briefings

We are holding regular site briefings for the community to hear from our engineers about how the project is progressing and find out what’s next on the timeline. Sign up to our email updates through our website to be kept informed of upcoming briefings.

Patterson River disruptions

The ability for boats to travel along the Patterson River has been maintained throughout the construction period. Our work zone is clearly marked with signage to alert boaters of potential navigation hazards. River traffic management will remain in place and all ramps at the Patterson River Launching Way will remain open throughout construction.

Some short river closures of a couple of hours will be required at times to safely construct the new Station Street road bridge. Any closures will be kept to a minimum and notice will be provided to river users.
