The Victorian Government is removing 18 level crossings and building 12 new stations as part of a$3 billion upgrade of the Frankston line that will improve safety, reduce congestion, and allow more trains to run more often.

We’re removing two dangerous and congested level crossings in Glen Huntly by lowering the rail line into a trench and building a brand new station. Early works will begin this year.

We’ve heard from the Glen Huntly community about how you want the new station precinct to look.

Responding to community feedback, we have now released new station designs inspired by local architecture along Glen Huntly Road, incorporating materials including brick, bluestone, and light-coloured granite in and around the station precinct.

The precinct will include the construction of a new vibrant forecourt, complete with seating and landscaping to generate more communal space for locals.

Improving the Frankston line

  • Removing 18 level crossings
  • Upgrading signalling to modern technology
  • Building 12 new modern stations
  • Plus the Metro Tunnel will cut time from your travel

Why these crossings need to go

  • 20,000 vehicles travel through these crossings each day
  • 3000 people use the Glenhuntly Station each day
  • 200 passenger trains use the Frankston line daily
  • Boom gates down for almost 60 minutes in the weekday two-hour peak

Glen Huntly Station's new features

What you’ve told us you want in your new station precinct

  • Contemporary designs that reflect local architecture
  • Improved station facilities
  • Safe and easy pedestrian access
  • Landscaping and seating
  • Improved lighting and safety
  • Public space around the precinct

Locally inspired designs

The design incorporates community feedback to create a station that blends traditional elements with a contemporary design and reflects the local architecture along Glen Huntly Road.

Upgraded station precinct

The construction of a new station forecourt will create more open space between the new station and Glen Huntly Road. This will include plants, seating and greenery for locals and passengers to enjoy.

Access to local shops, trams and trains will be significantly improved, with wait times reduced after the level crossings have been removed.

A new, consolidated tram stop at the front of the station will make connecting between tram and train services easier.

Lighting and safety

Passenger safety will be enhanced with upgraded lighting and CCTV cameras around the station precinct, including platforms, the forecourt and surrounding car parks.

A Protective Services Officer (PSO) office will be part of the new station.

New modern station

The new Glenhuntly Station will include improved facilities, including public toilets, a Parkiteer secure bicycle storage cage, bike hoops, ticket office and kiosk.

Stairs and lifts will connect passengers to each platform and allow for all-ability access to trains.

An enclosed and climate-controlled waiting room and under cover sections on the platforms will shelter passengers from weather.

Parking and access

Existing parking spots will be retained across the three station car parks. Dedicated pathways will provide rail passengers with safe access between the station and car parks. There will be 10 new motorcycle parking bays.

A new ‘kiss and ride’ area on Royal Avenue will allow passengers to be easily dropped off and collected close to the station.

There will be improved entry and exit points to the car parks.

Pedestrian and cyclist access

A new walking and cycling path will be built along the rail line, providing a safe connection between Ormond and Caulfield East.

There will be parking for 130 bikes in total with a new bike storage facility on Royal Avenue, which will provide safe and secure storage, and bike hoops outside the station.

With improved walking and cycling paths, there will be more ways for pedestrians and cyclists to safely access the Glen Huntly precinct.

The existing public toilets in the car park will be rebuilt and include a Changing Places facility for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

Lifts and stairs will provide easy access to the platforms, which will have weather protection and seating. Artist impression only. Subject to change.
