Kororoit Creek Road Community Update – September 2017

01 Sep 2017

Start of works at Kororoit Creek Road

Altona Loop commuters are a step closer to greater service reliability as works to remove the Kororoit Creek Road level crossing begin.

As part of the level crossing removal project, we are also duplicating 800 metres of the Altona Loop to provide space for trains to pass each other. This will improve the reliability of train services through the loop by greatly reducing the chances of delayed or cancelled trains.

Since August our work crews have been on site to:

  • erect fencing and concrete barriers around the work site
  • clear topsoil and prepare temporary roads in and out of the area
  • dig trenches and drill to make room for communications cabling under Kororoit Creek Road.

These early works will prepare the site for construction of the rail bridge.

The majority of our works can be done while the train line and local roads remain open. However, some closures are necessary to carry out work safely.

Design benefits

The level crossing removal project at Kororoit Creek Road will include a dual rail bridge design. The bridge will have a low visual profile and be integrated with the surrounding landscape.

Further benefits of the bridge design include:

  • a cladding and screening system which restricts opportunities for vandalism and graffiti
  • increased tree coverage including indigenous planting
  • minimised disruption to rail and road commuters through construction and use of ready-made parts built off-site.

The beams for the bridge will be built at a factory in Kilmore and shipped out to site for installation in mid-2018.

Our engineers will be on hand at future Community Information Sessions to answer any questions you have about the bridge design.

Community engagement

Thank you to everyone who attended our Community Information Sessions and Trader Information Sessions in the lead up to the start of works at Kororoit Creek Road.

We have been talking and listening to the community about the bridge design, our schedule of works, and how we can reduce impacts to the area during construction.

We are also holding regular meetings with our Stakeholder Liaison Group. The group is made up of representatives from different sections of the community and meets to discuss project impacts and aspects of the design such as landscaping.
