Grange Road, Alphington Community Update – December 2017

01 Dec 2017

The Victorian Government is removing two dangerous and congested level crossings along the Hurstbridge line, building a brand new Rosanna Station, and duplicating the single section of track between Heidelberg and Rosanna. This will make communities safer and get commuters in Melbourne's north east home sooner.

You will have noticed crews busy at work in Alphington recently, getting on with removing the dangerous and congested Grange Road level crossing.

Works will continue throughout the quieter summer holiday period, ahead of a major construction blitz in March and April 2018. The 44-day blitz will fast-track the Hurstbridge Line Upgrade and allow works to be complete six months earlier than planned.

During this period, buses will replace trains on sections of the Hurstbridge line and there will be some road closures and detours, with dates to be confirmed soon.

By the end of April, the dangerous level crossing will be gone for good and trains will be running underneath Grange Road for the first time.

Two large rail closures previously scheduled for January and May 2018 would have extended disruption to the community. Now, by closing the rail line for one major blitz in March and April there will be less disruption for passengers, and communities will start to enjoy the benefits of the project sooner.

To allow for project works, there will also be a smaller five-day rail closure from 7:00pm Thursday 18 January to 5:00am Wednesday 24 January 2018.

For more information on the major construction blitz in March/April 2018, visit the Hurstbridge project page.

What's coming up?

  • Ongoing cable installation along the rail corridor.
  • Ongoing construction of permanent concrete barriers along Wingrove Street to keep pedestrians and drivers safe when the rail trench is complete.
  • Installing foundations for new overhead electricity structures between Alphington and Fairfield stations.

24-hour works

To ensure the safety of our work crew and the public, occasionally we will work overnight while trains are not running. Upcoming night works include:

  • Thursday 18 January to Wednesday 24 January 2018.

  • Buses will replace trains on sections of the Hurstbridge line from approximately 8:00pm Thursday 18 January until Wednesday 24 January 2018.
  • Buses will replace trains on sections of the Hurstbridge line from Friday 16 March to Monday 30 April 2018.

Note: Planned and unplanned works may be carried out on the Hurstbridge line by other projects as part of regular maintenance and renewal programs.
