Hydrology assessments

We are undertaking a range of technical and non-technical investigations, including hydrology assessments.

What is a hydrology assessment and why is it important?

Hydrology assessments look at the existing surface water flows and the potential impacts on drainage and flood risk resulting from removing the level crossing.

Preliminary hydrology assessments have been undertaken to determine if there are any fundamental flaws with each design option. Generally, rail under solutions which require extensive lengths of cut below the existing surface, have a greater impact on the existing surface water flows. Rail over design options with bridges have less of an impact, as water can still flow underneath.

Any change to the existing surface water flow may have impacts on communities, aquatic ecology and vegetation.

Next steps

Once a design option has been chosen for each site, detailed flood modelling will be undertaken to determine the works required to maintain the existing flow conditions. The proposed design and supporting analysis will need to be reviewed and accepted by Melbourne Water as the relevant approval authority.
