We’re removing the dangerous and congested level crossings at McGregor Road, Main Street and Racecourse Road by building a rail bridge over the roads and building new stations at Pakenham and East Pakenham.

The Victorian Government has fast-tracked these level crossings for removal as part of a $15 billion investment to upgrade the Pakenham Line which will be boomgate free by 2025.

We’re extending the metropolitan rail line by 2km and building a new East Pakenham Station to meet the needs of this fast-growing local community.

With 4 tracks, the new East Pakenham Station will remove the major bottleneck for V/Line and Metro trains with bypass and turn back tracks removing congestion and improving service reliability for passengers.

The East Pakenham Station will open in 2024.

Features of the new station precinct

  • 2 lifts and stairs making it easier for everyone to catch the train
  • Protective Services Officer (PSO) office
  • Train passenger car parking
  • Dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones
  • Bike hoops Future bus bays
  • Landscaped areas.

Then new East Pakenham Station will be at ground level, located between Deep Creek and the Princes Freeway.

This station will be easily accessible from Ryan Road in the north and Sharnet Circuit in the south, with a pedestrian underpass to access the platforms.

Benefits of the new East Pakenham Station

  • Improves timetable reliability for metropolitan and regional train services
  • Faster journeys and more reliable services for regional passengers
  • Paves the way for more Pakenham and Gippsland trains to be added in the future.

Enhanced connectivity

We heard that Pakenham locals want their station to enhance connections around the area.

Our station precinct design makes provision for future bus bays, car parking, bike facilities and walking and cycling connections to cater to increased demand as the new suburb grows.

  • Pedestrians and cyclists will access the station from both the north and south via a pedestrian underpass
  • Dedicated pick-up and drop-off zones will allow passengers to be easily dropped off and collected close to the station
  • For cyclists there will be bike hoops outside the station
  • Train passenger car parking will be at the northern end of the new station, connected by a pedestrian path and underpass
  • Clearly marked disability permit parking will be located close to the station entrance

Lighting and safety

The East Pakenham Station will feature a Protective Services Officer (PSO) office and will have a staff presence 7 days a week.

There will also be CCTV cameras on platforms and station entrances, clear sightlines, and open and well-lit areas.
