Caulfield to Dandenong Area 2 community update - May 2018

29 May 2018

Clayton Station now taking passengers

Passengers stepping off escalator at Clayton Station

We have completed works to remove dangerous and congested level crossings at Centre and Clayton roads. Clayton Station is now operational and works are continuing on the brand new station. Clayton Station is now operational after the autumn construction blitz which saw overhead wiring completed on the deck and abutments, and the level crossings at Clayton and Centre roads removed. We would like to thank the community for their patience, support and enthusiasm during this period.

The boom gates at Centre Road were removed on 3 April and at Clayton Road on 10 April. More than 200 people came out to watch the removal of the notorious Clayton Road boom gates, cheering when they were finally removed.

On 16 April the brand new Clayton Station became operational with the first train arriving on time at 5:56 am. The event was marked with performances from local artists and give aways. While the station is operational, there is still more work to be done. We have began construction on the ground level station buildings and have started removing ballast and old tracks from the rail corridor.

On 21 April we held the Clayton Family Fun Day, with more than 1,000 people coming out to celebrate the big changes happening in the community. We would like to thank the local traders and performers who helped make this event such a success.

What’s coming up

Now the old Clayton Station has been demolished we will start work on building and ancillary building. We will also continue to construct other ground level station buildings. Construction of the open space will also begin and we are already preparing the old rail corridor for Clayton’s new community spaces.

We will continue to remove ballast (the crushed stones beneath the railway line), and old tracks from the area. Once the old track-related materials are removed, we will begin earthworks to remove stones and top soil in the area so we can form a stable foundation for landscaping that will follow.

Clayton’s New Open Spaces

Now that the level crossings at Clayton and Centre Roads have gone and Clayton Station is now operational we will be working on Clayton’s new parkland which will be complete by the end of 2018. The open space not only includes a 17km cycling path that connects Caulfield to the East Link trail, but also outdoor features for the whole community.
