Caulfield to Dandenong Area 2 Community Update – July 2018

25 Jul 2018

What we’ve been doing

All nine dangerous and congested level crossings between Caulfield and Dandenong are gone!

Our winter construction blitz saw the removal of the last four level crossings and the completion of the final section of elevated rail between Caulfield and Dandenong.

The level crossings at Centre and Clayton roads are gone and Clayton Station is operational with works continuing on the brand new station.

Recent works have focused on the newly created open space under the elevated rail line, including the 17km shared use path that is currently under construction. Works have also continued in preparation for the new open space areas around Clayton and Centre roads.

Crews have removed the tracks and resurfaced the road from the now defunct level crossing at Clayton Road. Works are also underway behind Clayton Station to prepare for the dedicated bus link road between Haughton and Carinish roads. The new road will allow buses to pick up and drop off passengers closer to the station, meaning commuters no longer need to cross one of Clayton's busiest roads.

Learning made fun

In early July staff from our project travelled to Monash and Oakleigh libraries to share their knowledge with youngsters at the libraries’ school holiday programs. Budding future engineers had the chance to design their own elevated train station using a selection of craft material. Our engineers were very impressed with the results.

What’s coming up

In the coming weeks works at Clayton Station will focus on completing the ground level station buildings.

Works on the open space will continue, with ongoing construction of the community activity space around Clayton Road and the 17km shared use path. Planting of the first oak trees at the new RSL memorial and ceremonial space on Carinish Road will commence in the coming weeks.

This time last year we were celebrating the installation of 25 beams in Clayton. Since that time over 170 beams have been lifted by crane and placed on top of the support piers to form the viaduct that is now home to the rail line!
