Carrum Community Update - May 2018

27 Apr 2018

The Level Crossing Removal Authority is removing 13 level crossings along the Frankston line to improve safety and reduce congestion. The construction of the new Station Street road bridge across the atterson River is the first stage in the removal of three dangerous and congested level crossings in the Carrum area.

Works are well underway for the construction of the new Station Street road bridge, which will provide safer and more direct connections for local traffic between Bonbeach and Carrum.

The new road bridge will connect Station Street, north and south, while creating new walking and cycling paths for safer access to Carrum Station, the beach, Patterson River and surrounding suburbs.

The bridge will feature a shared walking and cycling path, two lanes for traffic and a Copenhagen-style bike lane. The bridge will be open by the end of 2018.

Over the past weeks, construction works have taken place to remove the pedestrian bridge over Patterson River. The removal of this bridge has allowed us to start piling works to create robust and stable foundations for the new road bridge.

Road bridge construction

The construction of the new Station Street road bridge will rely on the installation of 20 steel piles that will support the bridge structure. The construction method that we are using is known as driven piling. This involves large steel tubes being welded together at Launching Way. The piles are then transported from Launching Way to the bridge on a pontoon. The piles are lifted into position using a 250-tonne crane on a jack up barge and driven into the ground using a hammer and vibrator attachment from a crane.  To assist with these works, there will be land-based cranes on each side of the Patterson River at the existing Station Street construction sites.

May construction works

Piling works for the construction of the Station Street road bridge will continue throughout May in the lead-up to the bridge beam installation. During these works, the barge supporting the 250-tonne will be relocated within the river boundaries to assist with the piling works and lifting materials for the construction of the bridge.

In late May, cranes will be positioned on the north and south abutment, and in the river to lift the concrete beams into place. Each beam weighs approximately 35-tonnes. The installation of beams will take place between June and July 2018.

Disruptions

Piling works are loud and will create increased levels of construction noise. For this reason, most works will be completed during the day between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday and 7am and 1pm on Saturday. We will let you know if we need to work outside of these hours.

We are making every effort to minimise construction impacts. We will carry out noise and vibration monitoring throughout this work to ensure we are complying with Victorian guidelines and we will notify you in advance of noisy or disruptive works. While it is unlikely nearby residents will experience vibration inside their homes, if you have concerns, please get in touch with the project team on 1800 105 105.

For more information on these works please see the disruptions page on our website. We will continue working closely with residents and traders to maintain access to properties and minimise disruptions wherever possible.

Construction safety reminder

Please use caution around any construction works. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are asked to observe all traffic management signs in the area.

Patterson River impacts

Some short river closures of a couple of hours will be required at times to safely construct the new Station Street road bridge.  Any closures will be kept to a minimum and advance notice will be provided to river users.

Further information will be available on the Marine Safety Victoria website. River traffic management will continue in place throughout the ongoing construction. All ramps at the Patterson River Launching Way will remain open throughout construction.
