Seaford Road boom gates gone for good
The Victorian Government is removing 13 dangerous level crossings on the Frankston line, and building a new train storage facility to improve safety, reduce congestion and run more trains, more often.
We want to thank you for your patience while our team worked around the clock through August and September to remove the Seaford Road level crossing. Following the major construction blitz, Seaford Road has now reopened to traffic without the boom gates, making it easier for locals to get in and out of the area.
Designs for the Seaford revitalisation have now been finalised following feedback from the local community, with works to start later this year.
Community feedback collected through June–July 2018 has helped to refine the design for the $10 million revitalisation that will include new community space and 6km of new walking and cycling paths.
Final design released
Nearly 400 survey responses collected online and through community engagement hubs helped to shape the new open community space and playscape, and landscape design around the walking and cycling path.
We heard that locals wanted the space to look natural, using stone and timber materials, with a desire for recycled materials where possible.
The design of the bridge has been updated with an earthy-bronze treatment that reflects the timber fence lines that once ran along the top of sand dunes in the area.
A high quality playscape with nature play elements, a wide range of vegetation to enhance the local area and ensuring safety of people visiting the area at all times were highlighted as priorities.
Feedback has been developed into the Seaford Revitalisation Community Engagement Outcomes report, by independent placemaking consultancy The Space Agency and is available at your.levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/seaford
Our design team has updated previous plans based on this feedback and designs are now finalised.
More than 100,000 trees, shrubs and smaller plants will be planted as part of the Seaford revitalisation.
Nearly 800 trees will be planted, with Coast Banksia, She Oak and Melaleuca among the 20 different tree species selected. Sixty-five different species of shrubs and groundcover will be planted, including native and indigenous vegetation.
Major works to restore and improve the RF Miles Reserve oval will start in late 2018 and will continue throughout 2019. The oval will be ready for the 2020 footy season with a brand new, improved surface.
After a six-week construction blitz, the Seaford Road level crossing has been removed, trains are running on the new rail line and Seaford Road has reopened – boom gate free.
Seaford Road in numbers:
- 16 L-shaped concrete segments up to 30 metres long and weighing 100 tonnes each.
- Seaford road was lowered by 1.5 metres
- 60927.4 m3 soil excavated
- 2.6 kilometres of new track
- 2.6 km of temporary track
- 35 kilometres of signal cabling
- 900 tonnes of steel
- 3,110 m3 of concrete poured and 2188.8 tonnes of precast concrete used.
- 25,000 tonnes of ballast
- The earth embankments are constructed from 45,000 tonnes of engineered fill
As you can see it was no small job.
