Veterans in Construction at Carrum

27 Aug 2019

To support Australian veterans transitioning into new industries, we have recruited Veterans in Construction (ViC) – a local social enterprise – to work on our new Carrum Station.

Beginning as an idea over coffee in 2018, ViC founders, Dan Cairnes and David Farrell MG, said their main goal was “to help our ADF brothers and sisters secure a great job in the civilian sector.”

Returning to civilian life and seeking employment in non-military industries can prove challenging for veterans. Many struggle to adjust to a life that doesn’t fit the same fast-paced and rigid structures of the Australian Defence Force.

ViC provides training and upskilling to returning veterans that allows them to enter the fast-paced construction industry.

Two ViC workers have begun heavy lifting activities in August with the use of a franna crane decked with the ViC branding and will be working at the Carrum site for approximately six months.

Carrum Station will open to passengers in early 2020 with works continuing on platform facilities, ground floor buildings and landscaping.
