St Albans level crossings set for removal by end of 2016

04 Oct 2016

The major construction blitz on the level crossings at Main and Furlong roads in St Albans got underway today. These level crossings will be removed by the end of the year – more than six months earlier than originally planned.

Removing these crossings will increase safety, reduce congestion and improve public transport for thousands in Melbourne's west.

Around 700 construction staff will work around the clock from tonight, removing the crossings and rebuilding both St Albans and Ginifer Stations.

To get these works done, the following disruptions will take place:

  • Buses will replace trains between Sunshine and Sunbury from 4 to 30 October.
  • Furlong Road will be closed from 12 to 27 October.
  • Main Road will be closed from 4 to 28 November.

During this time, V/Line will undertake more than $46 million in critical maintenance and renewal works on the Bendigo, Swan Hill and Echuca lines, with coaches replacing trains on these lines for the entire journey between 4 and 30 October.
