We're removing 10 more level crossings by 2025, bringing the total to 85 level crossings gone for good.

Six day construction blitz wraps up in Preston

14 May 2021

Thank you for your patience as we completed 6 days of around the clock work on our Preston Level Crossing Removal Project.

While trains weren’t running, we:

  • demolished Bell and Preston stations in preparation for the new stations to be built
  • carried out signalling, track and drainage works
  • installed new overhead wiring structures.

New temporary station facilities were set up and are now ready for use, ensuring people can keep moving throughout construction.

Now that trains have returned to the Mernda line, additional fences have been installed to separate the works area from the public and the rail line, to keep both the community and our workers safe.

Access to temporary stations

At Preston, access to the temporary station is via Murray Road. Access from Cramer Street is closed, with a pedestrian detour along St Georges Road.

At Bell, the temporary station can be accessed from Isaacs Street.

For more information about the temporary stations, please see our temporary stations fact sheet.

Both Preston and Bell station car parks will be closed throughout construction, with commuters encouraged to park at the nearby Reservoir or Regent stations.

The level crossings at Oakover Road, Bell Street, Cramer Street and Murray Road will be removed by the end of 2022, and the open space underneath the new rail line ready for locals to enjoy in 2023.
