Hurstbridge Line Upgrade Stage 2 planning underway

15 May 2019

Planning for the second stage of the Hurstbridge Line Upgrade is now underway. The upgrade will deliver further improvements on the Hurstbridge line, including more train services, less crowding on peak trains and better connections to public transport in Melbourne’s north-east.

The project will include:

  • a new station at Greensborough
  • the duplication of three kilometres of track between Greensborough and Eltham, while retaining the Eltham Trestle Bridge
  • the duplication of 1.5 kilometres of track between Diamond Creek and Wattle Glen.

This work will address key pressure points on the Hurstbridge line, allowing more trains to run and fewer delays. It will also deliver more regular train services, less crowding on peak trains, and better connections to public transport in Melbourne’s north east.

To ensure the best solution possible, crews will carry out site investigations along the Hurstbridge line in May. These will include geotechnical drilling works, environmental surveys, traffic studies and flora and fauna investigations.

The project team will be out chatting with locals in the coming months to understand the unique characteristics of the north east and what’s important to people in their local areas.

Construction for the project is expected to begin in early 2020.
