Pressing on with removing four level crossings in Preston

12 Nov 2019

Early works will start next year to remove four dangerous and congested level crossings at Murray Road, Cramer Street, Bell Street and Oakover Road, Preston. Brand new stations at Bell and Preston are also on the way.

By raising the rail over the roads, we will create stronger east-west connections and deliver new community open space under the 2km rail bridge.

The design of the rail bridge will maximise open space and by straightening a section of the track will allow for more trains in the future on the Mernda line. A community advisory panel will provide locals with the opportunity to directly contribute to the design of these open space areas.

We’ll soon be out and about at stations, in shopping centres and online to find out what's important to the Preston community. Look out for these locations, dates and times in our next e-update.

Work will begin in 2020 and the level crossings will be removed by the end of 2022, with the open space ready for locals to enjoy in 2023.

About 82,000 vehicles pass through the four level crossings each day. Bell Street is the busiest road in the level crossing removal project with 52,000 vehicles each day, and the boom gates down for up to 40 per cent of the morning peak.
