We're removing 10 more level crossings by 2025, bringing the total to 85 level crossings gone for good.

New Preston Station platforms are coming

20 Sep 2021

Work is continuing in Preston to remove 4 dangerous and congested level crossings by elevating the rail line over the road.

Buses replace trains on the Mernda line over the first 2 weekends in October so we can install 6 huge steel modules, which will form the foundations of the island platform at the new Preston Station.

The modules are made up of steel pieces which are pre-fabricated off site. The pieces are delivered to the site where they are assembled.

Each module weighs between 60 and 113 tonnes. To put this in perspective, a blue whale weighs around 100 tonnes!

The modules will be lifted into place by 2 cranes – a 350 tonne crawler crane and 400 tonne mobile crane.

When the modules are in place, concrete slabs will be installed to create the station flooring. These slabs will be craned in using 110 tonne cranes.

Once this work is completed, trains will be up and running again on the Mernda line while construction work continues on the rail bridge, platforms and new stations.

Please visit the PTV website to plan your journey.

The boom gates at Oakover Road, Bell Street, Cramer Street and Murray Road will be gone and the new Bell and Preston stations open by the end of 2022.
