New pedestrian and cyclist underpass now open at Cherry St

01 Apr 2021

An underpass for pedestrians and cyclists beneath the rail line near the old Cherry Street level crossing is now open.

The well-lit, wide underpass safely connects pedestrians and cyclists to either side of the rail line.

Due for full completion in mid 2021, the underpass has ramps and stairs and connects to other walking and cycling paths in the area.

The sides of the underpass feature timber battens and gabion facing that represent textures found around Werribee. It also includes green screening selected by the Werribee community in 2019.

The area will soon be landscaped with a mixture of native and non-native plants for the community to enjoy. Works in and around the underpass will continue in the coming weeks and months and public art is currently being installed.

With the new underpass now open, pedestrian and cyclists will no longer be able to cross the tracks at ground level from Cherry Street.

The Cherry Street level crossing was officially removed on Thursday 11 March when a brand-new road bridge opened to traffic.
