Mentone Garden Party and design reveal
22 Jan 2020
Last week we announced the latest designs for the much-loved Mentone Station gardens.
The Mentone locals attending the pop-up enjoyed the sunshine and a sausage sizzle run by the Friends of Mentone Station and Gardens. Experts from the project team were on hand to chat about the new designs and major works coming up on the Frankston line.
Kids enjoyed face painting while the crowd was entertained by a ukulele band. Community members attending the pop-up also participated in a lucky dip for vouchers from local traders to encourage shopping locally as works ramp up this year.
A major landscaping program will create a ‘garden bridge’ connected to the new ‘heritage deck’ once works are complete in late 2020. The new station garden designs include more green space and wider paths, with ramps and handrails to improve access for all community members.
A key feature of the design is a performance stage, which doubles as a seating area.
The five heritage-listed trees – two Norfolk Island pines and three Canary Island date palms – will be protected by temporary fencing while works are underway.
The gardens, which will close for works in early February, will be replanted in the spring growth season in late 2020 and reopened to the community in early 2021.
