Melton Highway artwork is on the level

05 Oct 2018

There will be one final twist in the tale of the Melton Highway Level Crossing Removal Project, with the proposed public artwork now finalised.

A concept from Glenlyon artist Jason Waterhouse has been chosen as the project’s preferred artwork following a comprehensive two-stage selection process, including detailed submissions from shortlisted artists that were evaluated by an expert panel.

The winning submission, titled Leveled Crossing, reuses the removed boom gates from the former Melton Highway level crossing and ties them together, fabricating the central ‘knot’ in steel and grafting it to the existing boom gates to give a seamless finish.

The artwork will be installed by the end of the year, as part of an architect-designed space under the eastern side of the new six-lane road bridge.

The expert panel included representatives from the Level Crossing Removal Authority, Brimbank City Council, Creative Victoria and the Office of the Victorian Government Architect.
