Major works begin in Dandenong to untangle old tracks

24 Mar 2021

Major works have begun to untangle the tracks at the junction where the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines merge in Dandenong.

Crews have begun to remove old track crossovers to build new parallel tracks as part of the Cranbourne Line Upgrade.

Current speed restrictions on this section of the rail network mean that trains need to slow down as they move towards the junction from the north and south.

Once complete in 2023, the parallel tracks will increase reliability, making it easier for trains to run to the timetable.

These upgrades will allow trains to run six times an hour on the Cranbourne line.

By 2025, the Cranbourne line will be the first metro train line to be completely level crossing free.
