Major construction begins at Furlong Road

23 Dec 2015

Major construction has started on removing another of Melbourne's dangerous and congested level crossings – this time at Furlong Road in St Albans.

Construction is now well underway to remove the level crossing at Main Road, St Albans, with work to ramp up in January at Furlong Road and Ginifer Station. At Furlong Road, summer works will include demolition and modification works at Ginifer Station, and piling in preparation for bridge deck construction in 2016.

The project aims to improve safety, traffic flow and promote economic activity in the St Albans area, with work expected to be completed in 2017.

Delivering Furlong Road at the same time as Main Road means that rail shutdowns can be shared and there will be fewer disruptions for the travelling public as well as project cost savings in the long run. This project, which will create 200 jobs, is part of a $480 million package of work to remove a total of four level crossings at Main Road, Furlong Road, Blackburn Road and Heatherdale Road. The Commonwelath Government is contributing $151 million towards the package of works.
