Level crossing out, new Aviation Road bridge in
30 Sep 2019
The Aviation Road level crossing in Laverton is now a thing of the past following the opening of the new road bridge over the rail line.
It is the 30th level crossing removed as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project.
The bridge – which opened months ahead of schedule – features a pedestrian walkway and dedicated bike lanes, and a new road connection that maintains access to the nearby Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) base.
A staged approach saw one lane of the bridge opened to southbound traffic earlier this month, allowing workers to put the finishing touches on the remaining lane and roundabout.
More than 1000 concrete panels were installed and over 77,000 tonnes of fill material used to help create the new bridge. The next stage of works will complete landscaping, lighting and a shared use path along Maher Road.
With about 140 passenger trains and lengthy freight trains passing through each day, the bridge’s opening means a safer, more reliable journey for the thousands of vehicles that travel through the area.
The Aviation Road level crossing is the second to be removed on the Werribee line with three more to be removed in Werribee and Hoppers Crossing.
