All works on the Cardinia Road Level Crossing Removal Project in Pakenham are now complete.
With the Henry Road intersection upgrade finished and cars now travelling through the intersection, it's time to demobilise our site sheds at Cardinia Road.
Since July 2021 our crews have made improvements to the Henry Road intersection, including:
- an additional right turning lane from Cardinia Road to Henry Road
- a new slip lane turning left onto Cardinia Road from Bridge Road.
Safety and traffic flow have been improved at the Cardinia and Henry roads intersection meaning the vehicles travelling through it each day will spend less time stuck at the lights.
Major works for Cardinia Road kicked off in October 2019 and the road bridge opened to traffic in December 2020.
In addition to removing the level crossing and building a new road bridge, we created:
- 1000 square metres of open space underneath the road bridge
- 300 new car spaces for Cardinia Road Station
- over a kilometre of new and upgraded pedestrian and cycling paths.
More than 23,000 vehicles travelled through the crossing each day, held up by boom gates which were down for up to a third of the morning peak.
