March construction blitz at Fitzgerald Road wraps up

Back to Newsfeed

Major works continue to remove the dangerous and congested level crossing at Fitzgerald Road, Ardeer by building a road bridge over the rail line.

We thank Ardeer locals for their patience while we completed 24/7 works in the rail corridor at Fitzgerald Road.

The Fitzgerald Road crossing will be removed along with Robinsons Road and Mt Derrimut Road on the Geelong and Ballarat lines to ease congestion across the network.

During the recent period of works, we:

  • installed barriers and drainage
  • complete signalling works
  • painted the road bridge.

The local community in Melbourne’s west will be able to look forward to better connections and reduced travel times following the works.

A typical morning peak can see the boom gates down for up to 45% of the time. This can delay tens of thousands of passengers and freight vehicles every day.

The Fitzgerald Road level crossing will be removed by 2023, along with Robinsons Road and Mt Derrimut Road level crossings on the Geelong and Ballarat lines to ease congestion across the network.
