On Tuesday 5 June, LXRA and the rail industry hosted a Rail Careers Day at Chisholm Institute for more than 230 school students and job seekers.
Participants spent the day learning about the many roles and opportunities available in the rail industry, including in engineering, operations, manufacturing and maintenance, asset management and customer service.
Students and job seekers had the opportunity to learn about ‘real world’ experiences and the many practical entry paths into various careers from a range of industry experts at speed-dating careers sessions. They also spoke about the fulfilling and challenging aspects of their roles. Experts got involved from LXRA, Metro Trains Melbourne, V/Line, Rail Projects Victoria and Downer, working in a variety of positions from project engineers to human resource managers to rail track supervisors.
Candice Maliko, Lead Project Controller at Bombardier, spoke about her journey in the rail industry and how she has arrived where she is today, highlighting that roles in rail extend well beyond the tracks. The day also provided the opportunity to speak to industry experts in more depth in the expo room.
It was fantastic to see so many future rail industry workers asking engaging questions and making the most of a day with those in the know.
The event comes ahead of the Australian Railway Association’s Rail Careers Week later this year.
