Issue #12

Removing 50 dangerous and congested level crossings will transform the way people live, work and travel across metropolitan Melbourne and improve safety for drivers and pedestrians.

Works almost finished and a family fun day to celebrate!

The new Ormond, McKinnon and Bentleigh stations are now complete, with station car parks set to open by Sunday 13 November.

The project team has fully reinstated all three main roads (North, McKinnon and Centre), including footpaths, and all lanes are open to traffic, with on-street parking returned to residents and traders.

In October, we replanted the community's much-loved palm trees (including some additional new palm trees) and constructed shared user paths. Final landscaping is almost complete, along with the restoration of local roads.

We have finally said goodbye to EE Gunn Reserve and have moved our equipment off site and handed the reserve back to Glen Eira City Council, who will now undertake their own reinstatement program. We will also soon be leaving our other worksite areas.

We would like to thank local residents and traders for your amazing patience while we removed these three level crossings and built new stations at Ormond, McKinnon and Bentleigh.

Please join us to celebrate the completion of the Ormond, McKinnon and Bentleigh station precincts and support local traders.

Jump on the steam train and join in the festivities with live music, activities for the kids, entertainment, showbags, giveaways and more.

Changes to the way you travel

Rail disruptions

Buses will replace trains on the Frankston line between Caulfield and Mordialloc stations from approximately 8:30pm on Friday 4 November to the last service on Sunday 6 November. During this time, the project team will undertake rectification works including making adjustments to the overhead wiring and routine testing of the train signals. For safety reasons, these works need to take place when the trains are not running.

Second entrance opens at Ormond

In late October, Ormond Station's southern entrance was opened to the community.

Following extensive community feedback, the project team was able to redesign Ormond Station to create this second entrance. With North Road carrying over 40,000 vehicles per day, the southern entrance will improve access for people living on that side of North Road.

This is a great example of community feedback helping to create better outcomes for the community.

Turning clay into art!

Our project members were presented with a unique memento thanks to a group of artists from Christchurch in New Zealand. Art collective, Public Share, partnered with RMIT University to bring its 'Out of Office' exhibition to Melbourne recently. The exhibition focuses on the relationship between art and labour, and the artists source clay spoil from work sites to handcraft into mugs, tumblers and stirrers, which are then gifted back to the original project for use by the workforce.

Clay was collected from the North Road site back in June as the rail cutting was being excavated. Public Share then crafted, glazed, fired and individually numbered 100 tumblers using the clay, which formed part of the 'Out of Office' Australian exhibition.
