Issue #09

Level crossings gone, tracks lowered, trains back

It took the team just 37 days over June/July to remove three dangerous and congested level crossings, excavate the rail corridor, lower the rail line under the roads and start building three new stations.

The project has reached an exciting milestone with the completion of major works, following an intensive five week program.

Not only have three level crossings been removed, the rail line has been lowered beneath North, McKinnon and Centre roads with trains running on their new tracks. McKinnon Station also opened on 1 August, with Ormond and Bentleigh stations set to open later this month.

What's next?

The good news is that while there's still work to be done, we have completed our most disruptive works.

Over August and September there will be a number of weekend rail disruptions, so the project team can get into the rail corridor to carry out further construction activities. Works will take place 24/7 over August at the station precincts while we complete the buildings.

Over the next few months we will:

  • finalise the three new stations
  • reinstate the third track
  • complete the new station car parks
  • complete drainage works
  • undertake landscaping and reinstate the roads
  • hand back EE Gunn Reserve to Glen Eira City Council to facilitate a reinstatement program
  • host station completion events/ community celebrations.

The overall project is on track to be complete by the end of 2016.

Parking is available in surrounding streets within a five to 10 minute walk of train replacement bus stops, with many streets having all day parking on one side.

Road disruptions

Some overnight closures will take place on McKinnon and Centre roads between 8.00pm and 6.00am (please refer to signage in the area).

On North Road, lane closures will be in place with a minimum of two lanes open in each direction during the day and one lane open in each direction at night.
