ISSUE #06

Removing 50 dangerous and congested level crossings will transform the way people live, work and travel across metropolitan Melbourne and improve safety for drivers and pedestrians.

At North McKinnon Centre, the project team is removing the level crossings by lowering the rail line under North, McKinnon and Centre roads, and rebuilding Ormond, McKinnon and Bentleigh stations.

What's happening?

Over the past three months, we've completed a lot of the ground work so we can finally remove the three level crossings at North, McKinnon and Centre roads and construct new station buildings at Ormond, McKinnon and Bentleigh.

Since January, the project team has:

  • Constructed the bridge decks at all three level crossings. By building these in advance we will minimise disruption to major roads when the rail line is closed for five weeks in mid-2016
  • Installed over 1.5 kilometres of sheet piles and around 600 concrete piles along the rail corridor to reinforce the new lowered rail cutting
  • Demolished Ormond and McKinnon stations
  • Undertaken major drainage works at Bendigo Avenue in Bentleigh and Station Avenue/Murray Road/ Glen Orme Avenue in McKinnon (including under the rail line)
  • Relocated 25 kilometres of existing signal cabling along the rail corridor and six kilometres of high voltage electrical cables
  • Relocated existing power and gas services.

The project team would like to once again thank the community for your ongoing support and patience during our works.

We know that disruptions are annoying, but they are needed so we can safely deliver a project of this size.

With the completion of the Easter works program, the longest of our full road closures are now over.

Mid-year major works

Now that we have completed the construction of the bridge decks at North, McKinnon and Centre roads, we are preparing to dig underneath these to form part of the new lowered rail cutting. This work will take place as part of an intensive five week work program which will run from Friday 24 June until Monday 1 August.

Creating the lowered rail cutting is a major undertaking that will see us excavate approximately 250,000 cubic metres of soil from the rail corridor between Ormond and Bentleigh (this is equivalent to filling the MCG).

To manage the volume of soil, some will be stored on the two rear ovals at EE Gunn Reserve in Ormond, which is close to the rail corridor. The soil will then be moved off site at a later date.

At the same time, we will start to rebuild Ormond, McKinnon and Bentleigh stations to create modern transport interchanges. McKinnon Station will reopen in early August followed by Ormond and Bentleigh stations in late August 2016.

Following these major works, the project team will construct the new station car parks, undertake landscaping (including the reinstatement of the palm trees that have been carefully placed in storage), put the finishing touches on the stations and reinstate the roads.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to provide feedback to the project team. Many people have commented on the friendliness of our traffic controllers and on-site workers and the efficiency of the overall project – some locals have even offered refreshments to our on-site workers! We really appreciate your support.

Changes to the way you travel

Due to current station closures, Frankston line trains are not stopping at Ormond and McKinnon stations.

Instead, customers may choose to use an alternative station or the train replacement buses operating between Caulfield and Moorabbin, stopping at all train replacement bus stops. From 12.45am on Saturday 4 June, Bentleigh Station will also close and trains will no longer stop at Bentleigh.

During the mid-year major work program, buses will replace Frankston line trains between Caulfield and Moorabbin stations from 9pm on Friday 24 June to the last service on Sunday 31 July. From 9pm each night, between Sunday 26 June and Wednesday 29 June, buses will replace trains between Caulfield and Frankston.

Please note Frankston line trains are operating from platforms 2 and 3 until 9pm on Friday 24 June at Glenhuntly, Bentleigh and Patterson stations.

Road disruptions

With the completion of the Easter works program, the longest of our full road closures are now over. There are no daytime road closures currently scheduled for April and May. Some overnight road closures will be required and these will be communicated in advance to directly impacted businesses and residents. During the mid-year major works program, some night and weekend road closures will be required. These changes will be communicated in advance.

Bus diversions

There are no bus diversions currently scheduled for April and May. Bus diversions will be required over June and July and these will be communicated in advance.
