The removal of Laverton’s level crossing on Aviation Road is a step closer, with community feedback being sought this month on the potential design options.
Based on our initial technical findings, there are three options being considered:
- A road over the rail lines
- Lowering the road under the rail lines with a new roundabout connection
- Lowering the road under the rail lines with a new T-intersection.
A rail bridge and a rail trench design were also investigated, but have been ruled out because of the significant disruption these options would have on the Laverton community and rail commuters. These designs would also disrupt the major freight line between Melbourne and Perth.
Community consultation as well as further technical and environmental investigations are important in helping us decide the best way to remove the level crossing. A recommended design will be finalised in early 2018.
Construction is scheduled to begin in late next year.
