It was announced today that the level crossing at Grange Road in Alphington will be removed by lowering the railway line under Grange Road.
The decision was made after assessing engineering considerations, community and land use impacts, local topography, environmental impacts, costs, disruption to transport users and construction risks.
During the community consultation period earlier this year, feedback focused on eight key areas including enhanced connectivity, preservation of visual amenity and vegetation and improved safety – elements which were considered in the development of the design solution.
The Grange Road level crossing removal is part of a package of works on the congested Hurstbridge line, including the removal of the level crossing at Lower Plenty Road, Rosanna, and duplication of the dated 1.2 kilometres section of single track between Heidelberg and Rosanna.
It is anticipated the design solution for the level crossing removal at Lower Plenty Road, Rosanna, will be confirmed early 2017.
Construction on the Hurstbridge line upgrade projects will commence in 2017 and is expected to be complete by 2019.
