The Victorian Government has awarded the contract for the removal of four level crossings at Furlong Road and Main Road in St Albans; Heatherdale Road, Mitcham; and Blackburn Road, Blackburn.
- Furlong and Main Roads in St Albans – works are expected to begin by October 2015, with completion expected in 2017
- Heatherdale Road in Mitcham and Blackburn Road in Blackburn – works are expected to begin by the end of 2015, with completion expected in 12 to 18 months.
The contract has been awarded to an alliance that includes Leighton Contractors, Aurecon and Hyder Consulting.
Boom gates at these four crossings are down for nearly an hour on average each morning. Removing these congestion hot-spots will reduce road congestion for the 60,000 vehicles that use the four level crossings each day, and allow more services to run on the Belgrave and Sunbury lines.
