The Victorian Government has announced the preferred contractor for the package of works to remove another four level crossings. An Alliance including Leighton Contractors, Aurecon and Hyder Consulting has been selected to design and construct the projects for the second package of works. The award of the contract is expected in the coming months.

This second package of works includes Heatherdale Road in Mitcham, Blackburn Road in Blackburn, as well as Main Road and Furlong Road in St Albans. It will cost around $480 million, including $151 million from the Australian Government for the Main Road project, and will create nearly 200 jobs.

Works will begin on Main and Furlong Road in the coming months and be completed in 2017. The removal of Heatherdale and Blackburn Road level crossings will start later this year and these crossings will be gone by 2018.

All four projects designs include lowering the rail line below the road, optimising the car parking to ensure there is no net loss of spaces, and building walking and cycling paths with improved pedestrian access to the station.

Main Road, Furlong Road and Heatherdale Road projects include a new station with lowered platforms accessed by stairs, ramps and lifts. Blackburn Road Project will retain the existing station with enhancements around the station entrances.
